For almost all of the settlements of the Salento is virtually improbable to speak of a certain date of foundation, the more the speech is worth for Tricase, who not coincidentally is known for its uniqueness as the Land of the Five Castles. It becomes truly difficult to express in numbers the origins of agglomerations, which, with the passing of years have given rise to the modern city.

The name has given rise to many hypotheses and opinions regarding the birth of the centre, but what historians have almost always overlooked is the difference that exists from the point of view of historiographic between Tricase centre, wards and hamlets.

A group of scholars has found in the name the possibility of the foundation of Malaga by the union of three casali, following the first barbarian invasions. In groups of three, have been called all the names of the small houses that have been able to contribute to the formation of Tricase, from the house of Amito Cuti what were called trunco, from them mender to Voluro, from Monesano to San Nicola. The most likely hypothesis is the one that wants to Tricase is not constituted by Three Houses, but between Houses. In this case, there is help from the etymology of the Latin inter casas, where Tricase can be born in a space between the various entities living in the surrounding.

The evolution of big history, leads straight to a particular period of the Salento peninsula, the one that began with the Normans, capable of establishing settlements by following two major strategies: military and economic. Tricase centre, with the natural bay of porto, the slightly elevated position, and the expanse, originally consisting of oak, which separates it from the sea, is for reasons purely economic in the space between the strategic positions of the farmhouses of Depressed, Tutino, were called trunco, and Caprarica. It is therefore true the hypothesis that wants the birth of the centre in the first half of the XI century.

Divided into several parts during the centuries of angevin rule (XIII-XIV), Tricase has had various Lords, including the de Galerano, de Castilla, de Lavena, before returning in the hands of the royal Curia, that September 21, 1401, in the person of king Ladislaus gave it to the powerful Raimondo Del Balzo Orsini, Prince of Taranto. After a brief interlude with the Della Ratta, Tricase returned to The del Balzo family to the struggles of the franco-Spanish 1528-29. With the victory of the Emperor Charles V, was the Castriota-Barns to govern, then the Pappacoda, Scipione to Prevent the for a week, and by 20 December 1588 the Gallon.

The latter, in 1651, raised the city to the seat of their Principality, and held it officially until the subversion of the feudal 1806, unofficially until the demise of the White woman Gallon, last princess of Tricase.
